Bob is right; you get what you pay for. Every editor, photographer and or photo-retoucher has their own favorites. I only use Photoshop for editorial work, including retouching images above a certain resolution and color depth. I have had good luck using the 60% student discount with my CS6 account. The learning curve on CS6 was long but was worth it in the end.

It really doesn’t matter which type of photography you are into or what your skill level is, digital photography is always and forever going to expand in scope. So which applications you should use and what you should use depends on where you are now and where you want to be in the next year, two years and a lifetime. A good editor has the knowledge and skill to know where to use Photoshop and where to use applications outside of it. Consider yourself as one of those editors. One of the most common uses of a graphic designer is to illustrate a message. In Photoshop you can do all sorts of things to an image in order to illustrate a message.
